Pomander Walk, How I wish I could live in such a beautiful area someday SOON ; - >

as seen and written in: http://curbed.com/tags/pomander-walk
Pomander Walk is one of those urban oases that you tend to forget exist, until a listing like this pops up on the market and your laptop gets shorted out from the drool spilling all over the keyboard. The block-long gated street runs from West 94th to 95th Street between Broadway and West End Avenue, and contains 27 Tudor-style homes built in 1922 to resemble the London stage set of the play called, wouldn't you know it, Pomander Walk.

"Black" Names

I just read a snippet of a discussion, online, regarding "Black" names like Shaniqua and Alize.

I have reached a point in my life where I have met quite a few people of African descent with such names who or are career executives, college graduates, extremely sharp, and well rounded so I think its a non-issue. I think there are probably hundreds of thousands of Americans with these names and there is nothing we can do and we should stop harrassing these people and ridiculing them. What are you gonna do? Rename them and provide new birth certificates? Is it that serious?

I have a very "normal" name according to our society, probably because many White people have my name and its European based. I don't think someone in my situation should ever feel like we are better than those with uncommon, unique, even strange names. Despite my name, I do know what it's like to be ridiculed for things I have no control over and its not fair.

I do understand that some names are questionable but that is to the fault of the parents and even then you have to question the root behind it. For instance children that are named after liquor like Alize, etc. However, some might think someone named Mercedes is named after a luxury car but the name Mercedes was around before the car so you really have to know what's up before you judge.

And alot of those unique "Black" names may not be African names but are derived from African names but the parents made it their own. You have to understand that African Americans were stripped of their names during slavery and were made to adopt the names of the slaveowners. So in the 60's and beyond many African Americans took it upon themselves to give their children names that were rooted back in Africa but with a fresh twist whether it be spelling or linking African names with other names to create something unique. Some have common endings such as -esha and -niqua and I say who cares...pay attention to the personality and the person and the name will warm up to you.

Like I said, there are hundreds of thousands of people with these names and their is nothing you can do about it so leave them alone. Its just a name.

Since we Americans love the works of Shakespeare so much, let's listen to what he wrote and actually practice it:

From Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, 1594:
JULIET:
'Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What's Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,
And for that name which is no part of thee
Take all myself.

Until then...

ACTING CLASS! I FINALLY MADE THE 1ST STEP ON FRIDAY

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE BEEN READING THIS BLOG FROM THE BEGINNING OR THOSE OF YOU WHO STARTED LATER ON BUT READ MY OLDER ENTRIES...YOU KNOW ABOUT THE TIME I PLANNED TO ATTEND A CLASS AT AN ACTING SCHOOL WHEN I LIVED IN ARIZONA...(A TELEPROMPTER CLASS) AND WHAT I WENT THROUGH... (IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THOSE BLOG ENTRIES...PLEASE DO...IT WILL REALLY HELP YOU GET A FEEL FOR HOW ANXIETY CAN COMPLETELY STEAL YOUR DREAMS)

ANYWAY, HERE I AM OVER A YEAR...I THINK OVER 2 YEARS LATER AND I FINALLY TOOK MY BABY STEPS BACK INTO ACTING AGAIN. (I PARTICIPATED IN THE DRAMA CLUB IN H.S....MOSTLY BACKGROUND STUFF...AND AN ACTING WORKSHOP...GLEE CLUB...AND VOICE WORKSHOP AND LATER ON I HAD A VERY SMALL ROLE IN MY EARLY 2O'S IN AN INDEPENDENT FILM...ONLY ABOUT 4 LINES)

I AUDITED A CLASS IN MANHATTAN ON FRIDAY...MY BOYFRIEND ATTENDED, TOO. HE IS ALSO INTERESTED IN ACTING. WE BOTH WORK FULL TIME JOBS BUT WE'VE DECIDED TO AUDIT AT LEAST 2 MORE CLASSES AND DECIDE WHICH SCHOOL WE WANT TO ATTEND AT LEAST 1 NIGHT PER WEEK.

THIS PARTICULAR ACTING SCHOOL, ITS MORE LIKE AN ACTING WORKSHOP, WAS SO PERFECT FOR ME BECAUSE THE INSTRUCTOR ALSO WORKS IN THE SOCIAL ANXIETY FIELD AND USES METHODS THAT HELP EASE THE ANXIETY AND STAGE FRIGHT OF HIS STUDENTS SO I AM ALMOST SURE THIS WILL END UP BEING THE BEST PLACE FOR ME. MY BOYFRIEND IS SO EXCITED AND HE, TOO WAS SO SURPRISED AT HOW THIS CLASS IS DESIGNED SO AMAZINGLY WELL FOR A PERSON WITH MY SITUATION. I THINK HIS METHODS ARE USEFUL FOR MOST PEOPLE...NOT JUST SOMEONE WITH AN ANXIETY DISORDER BUT I AM SO THRILLED THAT HE CREATED THIS AMAZING ACTING WORKSHOP/SCHOOL!!

EVERYONE IN THE CLASS WERE REGULARS EXCEPT FOR MY BOYFRIEND AND I, AS WE WERE GUESTS AND AT THE END OF THE CLASS MY BOYFRIEND AND I WAITED FOR THE STUDENTS TO EMPTY THE ROOM SO WE COULD CHAT WITH THE INSTRUCTOR.

AS THE STUDENTS LEFT, A BLONDE WOMAN WENT UP TO THE INSTRUCTOR (SHE HAD READ A SCENE EARLIER IN THE CLASS WITH AN ACTING PARTNER AND RECEIVED CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM AT THE END). WHEN SHE LEFT, MY BOYFRIEND AND I BASICALLY TOLD THE INSTRUCTOR THAT WE CAN'T SIGN UP NOW BUT WE ARE DEFINITELY INTERESTED...ETC...ETC...

SOMEWHERE IN THE CONVERSATION, THE INSTRUCTOR ASKED US:

"DID YOU SEE THAT YOUNG LADY...THE BLONDE ONE...SHE CAME UP TO ME AT THE END OF CLASS?"

WE SAID YES.

THE INSTRUCTOR CONTINUED, "SHE CAME UP TO ME TO TELL ME THAT SHE DID NOT FEEL ANXIOUS TONIGHT."

MY BOYFRIEND AND I LISTENED ON.

"SHE WAS EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE WHEN SHE FIRST STARTED...I REMEMBER HER VERY FIRST DAY AND HOW HARD IT WAS FOR HER."

ISN'T THAT AMAZING!!!!

UNTIL THEN...

If you know of Asians, Hispanics/Latinos and Indian celebrities with anxiety related disorders, let me know. I have a whole list of White celebrities so don't feel I am leaving White people out. I will be posting more...I just wanted a diverse mix of people and I hope to be adding more info soon.
